"We've been using the Internet to test our product for over a year now, and this is the first time we've ever offered a test without advertising," says the company behind the test, Flippa, which claims it has "the biggest user base on any mobile application" and was "on pace for over 200 million users this year."

There will be a test to run on any device running Android 5.0 or later, and one in which you can use the Google Play Store to sideload and run any app — and that will get you in at 1,500 points. The app for iPhones is just as simple, with a 10 point score that will get you the "best" version of Facebook and an even lower score of -10 points.

A score of -5 or lower is good enough for you to be banned from the app store. A score of -20 is good enough to see the app blocked altogether. For iOS users, you'll have to wait until you've spent around a day or so with the app before you'll be able to try it again.

Google has partnered with its own app developer called Flippa, a company which also supplies Apple's official iOS app store, to run the test. It's been using it in a pilot, but will see how well it performs in a broader experiment when it launches the app to the rest of the world on July 28.

Flippa has used the testing with users of its Android app to make sure the "app can be deployed to almost any platform without user interaction."

There are two things in particular that Flippa likes to check, according to Google: compatibility with Android 5.0 Lollipop and a "flat user interface" that makes it easy for developers to use Flippa on new devices rather than older ones and the absence of ads.

But why this app would launch on Apple's iOS at all, which has no such restriction, is difficult to answer.

Google says the company is looking at different ways to make it more mobile friendly before coming up with a "mobile optimized and more mobile-friendly app." At the moment, users can download an app on Google Play that is free. Google also recommends installing a launcher that you control like the official iOS Launcher, which doesn't do anything else to make the App Launcher look and feel like a native Apple app, but does let you pick a home screen.
